Cover Crops for gardens
After-Garden late cover crop seeds
A simple cover crop mix designed to plant after vegetable plants are done and still provide the benefits of loosening and protecting your soil from erosion, suppressing weeds, fixing nitrogen and providing live roots in the spring for soil organisms. May be planted up until mid October in Zone 5. Contains cereal rye, crimson clover, and hairy vetch; all will overwinter for maximum weed suppression. Will require spraying or tilling to kill prior to planting cool season vegetables before May. Mowing or trimming in late May will kill prior to planting warm season plants. Broadcast seeds and work into the top half inch of soil or cover with compost. Drop spreaders not recommended. Needs equivalent to 1” of rainfall per week until established. Do not fertilize cover crops as this slows down the nitrogen fixation of the legumes. 2-300 sf per lb. OMRI listed inoculant included.
